THE SHOAH (I)
– The Shive-Bird’s List
According to the Tradition, birds carry our prayers to God. I imagine these songs of the Shoah (especially the ones by or about children) as prayers of remembrance for the Yiddish poet Itzik Manger’s shive-foygl, the bird-of-mourning, to bring on her flight.

“The large bird of mourning” seems to be the only one alive in Itzik Manger’s post-war Jewish Poland.
The poet sings: “Over the ruins of Poland / A bird flutters around / . . . / The large shive-bird / . . . / carries on its flight / This sad song of mourning.”
(Song: “Unter Di Khurves Fun Poyln” - Lyrics: Itsik Manger - Music: Shaul Beresovsky)
