Berit Engen WEFT and D'RASH – A Thousand Jewish Tapestries

THE MYSTICAL (I-?)
– Hidden in Rays

The Kabbalah, “that which is received”, is the most difficult thing for me to study. I simply try to receive it the best I can. Frankly speaking, I do not consider myself great for the task of weaving this series. My driving force is the profound feeling from childhood that my world has always been filled with a sense of mysticism which made me feel both rich and lonely. How does one share powerful notions for which one lacks vocabulary?

These tapestries all lack the horizon. Landscapes often evoke in us a sense of the mystical, but in order to express the idea of ‘olam (infinity in time and space), I have chosen not to depict these beautiful views divided into heaven and earth, before and after. Instead, the images are floating and maybe experienced best by diving into them, leaving knowledge and reflections behind.
