Berit Engen WEFT and D'RASH – A Thousand Jewish Tapestries

BOOK OF PROPHETS (I)
– For Children: A Little Lamb and a Humongous Fish

The sayings of the Prophets appeal to children with their innocent instincts of right and wrong. My collection of illustrated children’s books is dear to me, and I keep finding inspiration in them for my Weft and D’rash project. The childlike (and at times quite graphically sophisticated) illustrations hit me in my childish guts and heart.

BOOK OF PROPHETS (II)
– For Grown-Ups: Daring Rebukes but Visions of Peace

Of the many roles of the Prophets, the role as social critic produced challenging imperatives in an allegorical, poetic language. I remember hearing them in Norway as a political activist in my teens, and I was amazed when, decades later I heard them in the synagogue in the U.S. and realized they were not created by a flower-power poet of the Sixties.
