Berit Engen: WEFT and D'RASH – Weaving a Thousand Jewish Tapestries

THE TALMUD (I)
The Making of a Book in Inklings of Blue

The series starts with the end: the closing of the compilation of commentaries which became the Talmud. The second tapestry goes to the beginning with the redaction of the Mishnah. From that simple looking tapestry, the series then builds with one new bluish color and rectangular shape symbolizing the Rabbis and their opinions added to the growing mosaic of commentaries in each subsequent tapestry. Each addition changes the appearance of the previous colors and shapes, even if, technically, they are the same. It is just as a new point of view can alter or add to previously stated opinions without invalidating them.

(7/7 tapestries)
