Of the many roles of the prophets, the role as social critic produced challenging imperatives in an allegorical, poetic language. I remember hearing them in Norway as a political activist in my teens, and I was amazed when, decades later I heard them in the synagogue in the U.S. and realized they were not created by a flower-power poet of the Sixties.
