According to the Tradition, birds carry our prayers to God. I imagine these songs of the Shoah (especially the ones by or about children) as prayers of remembrance for the Yiddish poet Itzik Manger’s shive-foygl, the bird of mourning, to bring on her flight.

– The Darkness of the Bleakest Days


The titles are phrases from poetry and songs expressing how the Jewish view of God, history, hope, and purpose was challenged.

 – The Unimaginable and in Spite of It


Survivors and the generation that followed the Shoah quietly kept the remnants together; the following generations picked them up and have felt able to renew, create, and state their presence.
