Berit Engen Tapestries WOOF and D'RASH - Weaving the Jewish Experience
HAGGADAH III
– Foodlude

We recite blessings for food, reflect on matzah, and we remember Rabbi Hillel with the help of a sandwich. Then we eat.

Haggadah III
Matzah (– the many-layered metaphor)
2010
8.5″ x 6.5″

The tapestry depicts the three wrapped and stacked ritual matzot. It is a meditation on this dry flat bread of little taste but of a large collection of contradictory, symbolic meanings: poverty, bondage, tribal hierarchy, religious status – and redemption and freedom.
