“Castle” is a word I use as symbol of an imaginary refuge that turns out to be a very lonely place. The “castle of disconnection” is a place for solace that happens to be the wrong place.

For decades I have sung the songs of Leonard Cohen. One day I heard him in a new way. Some of his words and phrases sounded strangely familiar from my studies of Biblical Hebrew and the Tanakh. The verb ‘to call’ is one of them, and it appears in one line that I had long been taken by.

“Shelter” is a word I connect with the psalms and the liturgy. As it conveys the human need for safety and protection, this ancient word never seems to get old.
